MEET THE LPOC EXPERTS
Meet with The Listed Property Owners’ Club experts and gather information about buying or owning a listed property, unauthorised works by previous owners, surveyance, grants, maintenance, mortgages and law. The Club can also provide specific advice and expertise available for owners or managers of flats/apartments within a listed building, including management companies, and commercial listed buildings.
CONSERVATION OFFICERS
Dr Jonathan Duck, LPOC’s Conservation Advisor, will lead a team of of independent conservation officers who will be available for free one-to-one conversations. They will help you better understand the obligations and requirements of owning a listed property and discuss any plans or hypothetical plans you may have for altering or extending your home. Remember to bring plenty of photographs and sketches of your property with you.
Alongside these officers will be a wide range of very experienced and competent RIBA registered architects all with the expertise and experience to develop your plans to fruition.

Over 150 of the country’s leading experts will be at the show to give advice and guidance. Many will be giving practical demonstrations including plaster and lead work, window restoration, lime mortar, master carvers, brickwork and paint. 2025 Show Talks
09:30 – 10:15 Traditional Paints
Find out about which type of paints are recommended for traditional buildings, how paints can help to keep buildings dry and how to spot some common mistakes.
10:15 – 11:00 The Importance of Considering Bats in Buildings
Jo Ferguson is the Built Environment Manager for the Bat Conservation Trust, with a background as an ecological consultant specialising in bat survey and mitigation. Jo will outline how bats use buildings and why they are so important in a bat’s lifecycle. She will discuss protected species legislation relating to bats, including why bats are so important to protect, and what to do when considering carrying out works where bats could be impacted.
11:00 – 12.00 Ask the Experts
Our Ask the Experts panel will be on hand to discuss a multitude of topics regarding owning a listed property. The panel will be led by LPOC’s Conservation Advisor Peter Bell and he will be joined by a Historic England representative, Historic Building Consultant Douglas Kent, Property Lawyer Suzanne Bowman and a Conservation Architect. Come armed with your questions, issues and concerns and join in the debate.
12:00 – 12:45 Lime in Traditional Buildings
An introduction to the use of lime in renovation. Covering a brief history of lime, the chemistry involved, types of limes and confusion with selection, additives and examples of typical applications, and problems associated with incorrect specification.
12:45 – 13:30 Structural Problems and Solutions in Old Houses
Ed will talk about his 30+ years’ of experience at looking at historic buildings and focusing on structural problems in domestic properties. This will range from movement issues and cracks, to the effects of water ingress and timber decay.
13:30 – 14:15 Building Performance: Keeping your home warm, dry and healthy
Traditional homes, designed during an era of costly energy, incorporated clever tricks to make them comfortable without gas and electricity. Over time, original elements deteriorated and knowledge of building performance disappeared. Discover how to reintroduce traditional features for improved comfort and how modern services can be integrated without risk.
14:15 – 15:00 Control of Dampness
Dampness is the biggest cause of deterioration in old buildings. Standard solutions that are applied for its treatment in modern buildings may be highly inappropriate and ineffective in traditionally constructed properties. This presentation explains the nature and causes of dampness, how to accurately diagnose it and the range of methods suitable for its control in older (pre-1919) buildings.
15:00 – 15:45 An Owner’s Guide to Obtaining Listed Building Consent
Obtaining Listed Building Consent and/or Planning Permission can be a challenging and complex task. Learn what it means for you if your property is listed and you want to undertake refurbishment or building works, and what you will need to do to successfully obtain Listed Building Consent and/or Planning Permission.
15:45 – 16:30 – Discovering the History of your House
Tracing the history of your historic home, focusing on what value this adds to your property as well as how you can use architectural clues and original records in archives and libraries to bring the story of your house to life.
10:00 – 10:45 Guide to Extending a Listed Building
Roger Hunt will explore how new work can be executed in historic contexts by integrating alterations or additions sensitively and sustainably whilst protecting historic character and fabric. The focus will be on embracing the aesthetic and practical benefits of marrying old buildings with new architecture through creative and thoughtful new design that is clearly of its time and readable as such. To achieve this, consideration must be given to details like junctions and aspects such as breathability and ageing, the material palette and the strategies used to create enduring, sustainable buildings that can be enjoyed by generations to come.

With so many different insulating products to choose from it is sometimes difficult to know where to start. Our experts have been supplying and installing insulating materials for decades and will guide you through the options.
11:15 – 12:00 Heating and Renewable Energy Options
The advantages and pitfalls of each approach of air, ground, and water source heat pumps, biomass boilers, HVO boilers and direct electric heating. Discuss the feasibility of installing these systems in your home.
12:00 – 12:45 Energy Efficiency Toolkit
If you own a brick or stone built property then this talk is not to be missed. Find out everything you need to know about chimneys and rear extension energy efficiency, conservation windows, and external wall insulation. This talk will help you navigate your local planning authority and make the right decisions, with examples of responsible interventions to a number of historic buildings.
